Ã¢â¬Å"Treat others how you would like to be treated.Ã¢â¬ This was one of my sisterÃ¢â¬â¢s favorite sayings when I was growing up. There were a few sayings that she quoted to me all the time, but I know this by far was her favorite. She was the type of person that would stand up for others no matter the situation, to treat every human being with the dignity and respect they deserve. Throughout her life, she demonstrated her belief through her actions. Kalynn Blassingame Cleary is a twenty-two-year-old Army combat medic stationed at West Point, NY. She currently is taking online classes to obtain her BachelorÃ¢â¬â¢s degree in Psychology/Social Work at Collin College. Her current profession as a combat medic has permitted her to follow her lifelong dream and passion to help people when they are in need. During her enlistment process with the Army, she took a test that listed her aptitudes and it was determined that she would be a good fit as a combat medic. To be qualified as a combat medic, you have to go through 12 weeks of medical training and pass a 5-day final exam. Her current job as a combat medic is at the Cadet Health clinic, which is located at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Understanding A Piece Of Transsexuality The human gender seems to be the outlining template for society only recognizing men and women. Not many people ask themselves: what happens when those absolutes become crossed? We as a culture might not understand the variances within people and we tend to allow ignorance and complacency to rule as we judge others. Transsexuality is one of those variances. In weeks 34 to 41, boys typically have 10 times more of the masculine hormone than girls. Hines concludes that these differences appear to have long-term effects in gender differentiation. Little Buddha Little Buddha was a movie staring Keanu Reeves about a boy named Jesse who was thought to be the reincarnation of a Tibetan teacher named Lama DorJe. In the movie, Jesse is given a book by Lama Norbu that explains how Buddhism originated. Followers believe that it was started by Prince Siddhartha, who was played in the movie by Keanu Reeves. Siddhartha soon became an Ascetic and was one for 10 years until he heard a passing musician tell his pupil, Ã¢â¬Å"If you pull the string too tight, it breaks, but if itÃ¢â¬â¢s too loose, it wont play. this led Siddhartha to believe the Ascetic life was too extreme, and he decided to go to the river to bathe. While he was bathing, a beautiful woman came up and offered him rice, and he took and ate the rice with the other Ascetics watching him. He was then banished from the Ascetic Tribe because he was disloyal to the religion. Siddhartha was now trying to find Enlightenment a differe nt way. As Siddhartha was trying to find Enlightenment he meditated under a tree. The demon Mara didnÃ¢â¬â¢t want him to progress and so he tried to distract Siddhartha by making him want his Five Daughters. The Five Daughters Of Mara are Pride, Fear, Desire, Ignorance and Greed. Siddhartha could not want any of these because if he id he would have to start the whole process of Enlightenment all over again. Mara tried to distract him with many images of discomforting things. For example, he had an army of soldiers light up flaming arrows and show them at him, but all that happened was that the arrows turned into flower pedals and landed all around him. Another example of MaraÃ¢â¬â¢s distractions was a mirror image of himself talking about things he would want to desire but Siddhartha didnÃ¢â¬â¢t listen and then Mara was overcome. Siddhartha then reached Enlightenment. At the end of the movie, it turns out that Jesse and two other kids were all the reincarnation ot Lama DorJe. Lama Norbu said that it was extremely rare that a reincarnation can turn into three people, but he said it can happen, and in this case, it did happen. Lama Norbu said that when three people are a reincarnation, one person is Ã¢â¬Å"Mind,Ã¢â¬ another is Ã¢â¬Å"Body,Ã¢â¬ and the last is Ã¢â¬Å"Spirit. For example, when you first see him, when he is being born, that is when the setting was the brightest. Also, almost everybody was dressed in bright colors such as red, gold, and silver. This shows that Siddhartha is the erson who is going to be the person who is going to become the Buddha or the Ã¢â¬Å"Enlightened OneÃ¢â¬ Or maybe since he was the Ã¢â¬Å"Enlightened One,Ã¢â¬ they try to deliberately put more light on Siddhartha always when we see him. However, during the period of time when Siddhartha is looking for Enlightenment, the light is a little bit darker than when he finds Enlightenment. But during the time he was trying to find Enlightenment with the Ascetics the colors were brown and gray, so in a way, that showed us that was not the right path to take. Then when he is tempted by Mara, the colors change to dark blue, gray, and black so we know that Mara is a bad omen. As a nine-year-old visiting the University of Pennsylvania for the first time, I stopped in front of one of the many statues that dot the campus and peered into its face. I studied its nobility, its deep contours reflecting knowledge, intellect, even wisdom. My father told me it was Ben Franklin, reminding me that IÃ¢â¬â¢d probably heard about him in school, and I remembered that I had just learned about him. I had admired him for his many accomplishments in science, philosophy, education and politics. We continued on our walk and I absorbed PennÃ¢â¬â¢s scholastic atmosphere and majestic architecture. By the time we left, I was determined to work hard and go to college there. Returning to visit Penn recently felt like a homecoming. This time I was struck not only by the magnificence of the campus and Philadelphia but also by the opportunity for learning, growth and development offered there. I plan to learn outside of the classroom, too, and contribute to the Philadelphia community. When I moved here from England, this city was my first American home, and I still consider it special. It possesses a friendly atmosphere and cooperative spirit I have found nowhere else. In high school, I realized the importance of giving back to the community and began volunteering at a hospital. At Penn, I hope to give back to my Ã¢â¬Å"homeÃ¢â¬ city by continuing my work as a hospital volunteer. Because I have always helped my peers with schoolwork, teaching is second nature to me. The satisfaction I derive from teaching led me to my job at an international learning center that hones childrenÃ¢â¬â¢s math and reading skills. PennÃ¢â¬â¢s vibrant musical opportunities also attract me. I play the flute in my schoolÃ¢â¬â¢s wind ensemble, marching, and jazz bands, and, at Penn, I would like to join the Wind Ensemble and other performing-arts groups. My dream of attending Penn has only gotten stronger the more IÃ¢â¬â¢ve learned about it. Penn will allow me to learn and develop more than any other school. There, I will pursue my existing diverse interests, explore new ones, and contribute meaningfully to the Philadelphia community.

Roth v. United States Supreme Court Decision What is obscenity? This was the question put before the Supreme Court in the case of Roth v. United States in 1957. Its an important decision because if the government can ban something as obscene, then that material falls outside the protection of the First Amendment.Ã Those who wish to distribute such obscene material will have littleÃ if any, recourse against censorship. Even worse, allegations of obscenity stem almost entirely from religious foundations. This essentially means that religious objections to a specific material can remove basic constitutional protections from that material. Fast Facts: Roth v. What Lead to Roth v. United States? When it reached the Supreme Court, this was actually two combined cases: Roth v. United States and Alberts v. California. Samuel Roth (1893-1974) published and sold books, photographs, and magazines in New York, using circulars and advertising matter to solicit sales. He was convicted of mailing obscene circulars and advertising as well as an obscene book in violation of the federal obscenity statute: Every obscene, lewd, lascivious, or filthy book, pamphlet, picture, paper, letter, writing, print, or other publication of an indecent character... is declared to be nonmailable matter... Whoever knowingly deposits for mailing or delivery, anything declared by this section to be nonmailable, or knowingly takes the same from the mails for the purpose of circulating or disposing thereof, or of aiding in the circulation or disposition thereof, shall be fined not more than $5,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. David Alberts ran a mail-order business from Los Angeles. He was convicted under a misdemeanor complaint which charged him with lewdly keeping for sale obscene and indecent books. This charge included writing, composing, and publishing an obscene advertisement of them, in violation of the California Penal Code: Every person who wilfully and lewdly... writes, composes, stereotypes, prints, publishes, sells, distributes, keeps for sale, or exhibits any obscene or indecent writing, paper, or book; or designs, copies, draws, engraves, paints, or otherwise prepares any obscene or indecent picture or print; or molds, cuts, casts, or otherwise makes any obscene or indecent figure... is guilty of a misdemeanor... In both cases, the constitutionality of a criminal obscenity statute was challenged. In Roth, the constitutional question was whether the federal obscenity statute violated the provision of the First Amendment that Congress shall make no law ...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ...In Alberts, the constitutional question was whether the obscenity provisions of the California Penal Code invaded the freedoms of speech and press incorporated by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Courts Decision Voting 5 to 4, the Supreme Court decided that obscene material has no protection under the First Amendment. The decision was based on the premise that freedom of expression does not provide absolute protection for every possible utterance of any sort: All ideas having even the slightest redeeming social importance - unorthodox ideas, controversial ideas, even ideas hateful to the prevailing climate of opinion - have the full protection of the guaranties, unless excludable because they encroach upon the limited area of more important interests. But implicit in the history of the First Amendment is the rejection of obscenity as utterly without redeeming social importance. But who decides what is and is not obscene, and how? Who gets to decide what does and does not have redeeming social importance? On what standard is that based on?Ã Justice Brennan, writing for the majority, suggested a standard for determining what would and would not be obscene: However, sex and obscenity are not synonymous. Obscene material is material which deals with sex in a manner appealing to prurient interest. The portrayal of sex, e. g., in art, literature and scientific works, is not itself sufficient reason to deny material the constitutional protection of freedom of speech and press. ...It is therefore vital that the standards for judging obscenity safeguard the protection of freedom of speech and press for material which does not treat sex in a manner appealing to prurient interest. So, there is no redeeming social importance to any appeal to prurient interests? Prurient is defined as excessiveÃ interest in sexual matters.Ã This lack of social importance associated with sex is a traditionalist religious and Christian perspective. There are no legitimate secular arguments for such an absolute division.Ã The early leading standard of obscenity allowed material to be judged merely by the effect of an isolated excerpt upon particularly susceptible persons. Some American courts adopted this standard but later decisions have rejected it. These later courts substituted this test: whether to the average person, applying contemporary community standards, the dominant theme of the material taken as a whole appeal to prurient interest. Since the lower courts in these cases applied the test of whether or not the material appealed to prurient interests, the judgments were affirmed. The Significance of the Decision This decision specifically rejected the test developed in the British case, Regina v. Hicklin. In that case, obscenity is judged by whether or not the tendency of the matter charged as obscenity is to deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences, and into whose hands a publication of this sort may fall. In contrast, Roth v. United StatesÃ based the judgment on community standards rather than the most susceptible. In a community of very conservative Christians, a person could be charged with obscenity for expressing ideas that would be regarded as trivial in another community. Thus, a person might legally sell explicit homosexual material in the city, but be charged with obscenity in a small town. Conservative Christians could argue that the material has no redeeming social value. At the same time, closeted gays could argue the opposite because it helps them imagine what life might be like without homophobic oppression. While these matters were decided over 50 years ago and times certainly have changed, this precedent could still affect current obscenity cases.
